Q: Why was Refugees United created?
A: Refugees United was born after the founders, David and Christopher, helped a young Afghan refugee named Mansour locate one of his lost brothers. Realizing the tremendous effort it took to seek lost family, we recognized the need for an online, barrier-free global network based on self-sufficiency. Simple, safe, anonymous and free of charge.
Q: What differs Refugees United from other agencies tracing family?
A: With refunite.org refugees take the search into their own hands. There are no forms to fill in and no waiting lists. The power of the search is entirely in the hands of the refugees. Furthermore, it is possible not to register with a full name, address or any other information that might be sensitive to share. It is possible eg. to register with initials, village of origin and date of birth, or other markers only identifiable to family and close friends. Another option is to register with only a picture of yourself and a village.
The information is not recorded anywhere, IP addresses will never be logged and therefore no one's true, physical location can be found. Communication between seeker and sought is managed in a secure closed-circuit message system, which allows people to share further information through messages only visible to the two parties.
Q: Do you share the information I put into the database with anyone else?
A: No. Only the information of your choice will be visible in the search engine. And if you choose to further engage in a mail correspondence, only the receiver and you will have access to the information.
Q: Can I only search for family at refunite.org?
A: No. At refunite.org you can look for friends, relatives and anyone else you would like to reconnect with.
Q: Can every refugee search through refunite.org, or is it only refugees from a special place or conflict?
A: Every refugee can use our service. It doesn't matter if you're a refugee from the wars and turmoil of Iraq, Lebanon or Palestine, or an internally displaced person in Colombia or still seeking family from when you fled Vietnam or Cambodia decades ago. In short, every person who has been touched by conflict, disaster or other uprooting factors can utilize our service. You can also search and register if you live "under the radar". Refunite.org is for every refugees looking for lost loved ones.
Q: How do you benefit from this project?
A: We benefit by contributing to a better world. We do this, because after we brought the two brothers together in Afghanistan, we realized the unnecessary hardship many refugees must endure to find family. There is no reason why a destitute demographic like refugees should be cut out of the conveniences of a connected network many in this world enjoy. We do this because we have the will and dedication to succeed. We do this, because we believe if the tables were turned, you would do the same for us.
Q: What is a non-profit organization?
A: A non-profit organization ('NPO' or 'non-profit' or 'not-for-profit') is an organization whose primary objective is to support an issue for non-commercial purposes.
Q: What is an NGO?
A: NGO stands for non-governmental organization. In its broadest sense, a NGO is one that is not directly part of the structure or economy of government.
